Is Apple Planning Any Updates For Pro Display XDR and Studio Display?

Apple’s external displays, such as the Pro Display XDR and Studio Display, have not received a hardware update for years, and there is no concrete information about the new models yet. The Pro Display XDR and Studio Display, which are in Apple’s external display portfolio, have been on the market for a long time without a hardware update. The Pro Display XDR, in particular, has not seen any innovation in almost five years, despite being released in December 2019. This high-quality monitor, which has a 32-inch screen, LED backlight, 6K resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, and 1,600 nits of brightness, is still on sale starting at $4,999. However, users are eagerly awaiting the introduction of a new-generation model.

Expected innovations in Pro Display XDR and Studio Display

Apple’s high-end Pro Display XDR monitor was initially designed to be a high-end solution for creative professionals. However, technology has advanced rapidly over the past five years, leaving the monitor behind its competitors in terms of features. While features like 6K resolution, P3 wide color gamut, and high brightness are still impressive, a new model is a must for users looking for additional features like higher refresh rates, integrated cameras, and speakers.

In December 2022, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was working on a new Pro Display XDR model with an Apple Silicon chip. That new chip could allow for smart features like Center Stage camera framing, spatial audio, and Siri , as with Studio Display . However, little has been said about a new model since then, and Apple’s current plans remain unclear.

Apple expanded its product range in the external display market by launching the Studio Display in March 2022. This monitor offers features such as a 27-inch 5K resolution LCD display, 60Hz refresh rate, and 600 nits brightness. It also aims to provide a user-friendly experience with its integrated camera and speakers. However, there has been no current hardware refresh for this Apple monitor.

While Apple’s plans for external displays remain unclear, rumors have occasionally surfaced about a new 27-inch display that could offer higher brightness and contrast ratio with a mini-LED backlight. In April 2023, renowned Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that this display would enter mass production in 2024 or early 2025. However, it is not clear whether this monitor will be the next Studio Display or will come out with different branding.

Apple may be working to expand and modernize its external display portfolio, but information has been limited so far. Users are looking to see a next-generation Pro Display XDR or Studio Display model that offers higher refresh rates, better brightness, and advanced smart features. But with just a few months left in 2024, it’s still unclear when those expectations will be met.

It seems like it’s time for Apple to refresh its external display lineup, and any further delays could cause users to turn to alternative brands. Apple needs to work harder on the next-generation displays to keep its products competitive and meet the expectations of its users.
