The United States’ communications regulator has taken action by blocking the popular communication platform Discord, which has become very popular recently, especially among streamers and gamers, on the grounds that it violates the country’s laws. The announcement of the closure of Discord, which was founded in the US in 2015 and provides gamers with better quality communication, was published by the TASS news agency on Tuesday.

According to the published report, the decision to block Discord was made by the country because Russia was outside of its internet regulations and the legal framework it has established. Russia, on the other hand, gives the impression of being quite strict about this block.

While Discord has yet to comment or update its status on the Russian shutdown, the development comes amid ongoing global debates around tech companies and government regulation, particularly around data privacy and freedom of expression. The Russian Federal Agency for Supervision of Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) has stated in an official statement: “ Access to the Discord messaging app has been restricted due to violations of Russian legislative requirements to prevent the use of the app for terrorist and extremist purposes, including recruitment of citizens for these purposes, drug sales, or the provision of illegal information.”

Roskomnadzor had previously sent requests to remove 947 known illegal materials from Discord.
