Snap’s move has created a huge stir in the AR world ahead of the Connect conference, where Meta is expected to introduce its AR glasses. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel:
“We need to deliver truly compelling experiences. By working closely with developers and continually improving our platform, I believe we will create many compelling lenses that people will try with Spectacles,” he said.
The new model Spectacles glasses work with a completely new operating system called Snap OS. The operating system in question is built on the Android kernel. It can respond to the user’s voice and movements. This operating system, which improves environmental perception, allows AR effects to be presented more effectively. In addition, the glasses offer an expanded field of view and automatically darken against sunlight.
However, the new Spectacles 5 will not be available to consumers at launch. The company plans to offer the glasses only to developers who are building AR features, for a monthly subscription fee of $99. Snap says that this new operating system will allow multiple Spectacles users to have more immersive AR experiences. For example, two users in the same room will be able to play a game on a virtual chessboard.
The design of the glasses may be a bit large and bulky, but their AR capabilities are remarkable. The glasses are powered by dual Qualcomm Snapdragon processors, one on each temple, and weigh around two hundred and twenty grams. Despite the limited field of view, users say the AR technology is impressive.
